The Burnt Soul guide to winter music festivals in Europe

Making up for lost time... Our guide to the best winter music festivals in Europe

Burnt Soul's guide to winter festivals in Europe has been researched and written for you by our seasoned Burnt Souler and festival fiend, Jessi Dimmock. Jessi is the writer of Where's my tent?, a festival fanatic's blog. She knows everything you need to know about music festivals, in Europe and beyond.

All we can say is after reading her suggestions below, we're 5 seconds away from packing our bags and jumping on the nearest train to Butlins... hope you enjoy this as much as we did!

Jessi at various festivals this summer, repping her large collection of Burnt Soul catsuits and bodysuits

I don’t know about you but the summer of 2021, despite still being a “Covid Light” version of the usual full-fat UK festival season, was filled with so many smiles, colours and memories, I spend my evenings scrolling back through the photos of the last few months and reminiscing.

I find myself willing time to go faster so we can skip winter and get back round to field-based antics, heavy basslines and fabulous outfits that are a weekly occurrence between May and September.

Well I’m here to tell you that those heady days don’t have to be so far away!

Believe it or not there are still many festival vibes to be had over winter in Europe - which means many excuses to wear those headdresses, catsuits, sequins and bumbags, should you choose to adventure into slightly new territory that doesn’t involve sleeping in tents - I know, weird right?

Tara Margulies snowbombing in catsuits ofc!

I’ve hooked up with the wonderful Burnt Soul to put together a list of some of the best festival-style events happening in the UK and Europe this winter. I’m hoping to go to as many as possible of these myself so say hi if you see me!

Gotta keep the festival love flowing even in the colder months! So grab your best outfits and find me in the main room, front left.

Mighty Hoopla Weekender 28th - 31st January

For the first time, the fabulous Mighty Hoopla are hosting a Weekender event at Butlins in Bognor!

Usually a one-day festival in South London celebrating all things pop and all things queer, I’m so excited to be joining this rainbow- and sparkle-fuelled weekend of mayhem in January.

You can book by the individual room or the full apartment if you can round up a group of mates, but hurry as there aren’t many spaces left!

Headliners are Sophie Ellis-Bextor, The Vengaboys, and B*Witched - poptastic!

Cream Weekender 3rd - 6th December

Classic dancefloor fillers of early 00’s house bangers and Ibiza anthems, this Butlins Weekender will be one to remember.

Holiday park takeovers are a great way to get full festival weekends without the need to be outdoors.

The crowd here will probably skew slightly older, between 25-40, and the vibes will be super friendly.

Headliners are Roger Sanchez, Armand Van Helden, and Paul Van Dyk. Get some friends together and book one of their apartments!

Hogmanay 31st-2th January

New Year in Scotland is taken very seriously - it’s not just a few fireworks when the clock strikes midnight. This is party through the streets with music, food, drinking and dancing, and it usually lasts a few days.

With this year’s NYE falling on a Friday, you can be sure this will be a full weekend of crazy parties and fun!

Ibiza legends 22nd-26th July

Hosting Judge Jules, Rob Tissera, and Faithless, along with pool parties, a silent disco and live comedy, this Weekender has it all.

A full 3 days and 3 nights of Ibiza classics, plus all the fun of Butlins itself (bowling, sports bars, arcades…) this will be one hell of an adult playground.

There aren’t many apartments left so book soon!

Let It Roll Winter 18th-19th February

Head over to Prague this February for the winter edition of one of Europe’s largest drum n bass festivals, Let It Roll.

To keep the cold away, this one is hosted indoors, in the huge PVA Expo space. They’re keeping the line up close to their chests, but with the main festival hosting such incredible DJs as Wilkinson, Sub Focus, Hybrid Minds and Dimension, we can be sure they will pull out the big guns.

Prague is also a beautiful city for a winter break, so why not extend your visit by a few days, take a walk up to the castle and pick up a trdelník?

Snowboxx 19th-26th March

Taking Après to the next level, this week long holiday is half ski half festival - you’ll be tackling the red slopes in the morning, and then carving your way to the slope-side après party by 3pm.

I went to Snowboxx in 2018 and what I loved was how much this really was half and half. The festival days are Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, so you get a day off in between to properly ski recover. There is so much to squeeze in, and it’s all set in the beautiful Avoriaz in the Alps.

If you want to know more, you can read my Snowboxx review blog from 2018 here. Headliners announced so far are Andy C, Annie Mac and Becky Hill

Tomorrowland Winter 19th-26th March

Another ski festival, but this time taking the incredible sights and sounds of Tomorrowland - one of the biggest electronica festivals in the world - and creating it on the slopes of Alpes D’Huez.

Think huge, beautiful stages, nestled in amongst the snowy trees, dawn raves, beautiful artwork… The 2022 Tomorrowland Winter is sadly already sold out, but I honestly recommend following them on Instagram and getting prepared for the 2023 festival.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland 19th November - 6th January

One of London’s main winter attractions, this huge event takes over Hyde Park and gives you the thrill of big theme park rides, many street food options, lots of gorgeous market stalls, and more mulled wine than you can shake a stick at.

Winter Wonderland can be quite hectic, but honestly if you can go on a weekday, or in the last few weeks it’s open (after Christmas) it can be a bit quieter and really quite fun.

I am a particular fan of the Bavarian Beer Haus - they usually have a great house band playing chart toppers in their cheesy German style.

It feels like a school lunch hall with long bench tables, but the atmosphere is worth the drinks prices. Don some glitter and fluffy earmuffs, and let yourself have a night of tacky fun.

Quick note: this year you have to book your entry date and time and it costs £5 per person, you can’t just walk in like in pre-COVID times.

Altitude Comedy festival 28th March-1st April

9. Altitude Comedy Festival - March 28- April 1st - Mayrhofen, Austria

Something a little different! This is a skiing holiday festival, but with comedians as the headliners.

The line up hasn’t been released yet, but to give you flavour, previous editions have hosted Jimmy Carr, Lee Mack, Katherine Ryan, Frankie Boyle, Bill Bailey, Tim Minchin, and Nina Conti to name just a few.

Multiple venues host a whole range of comedy throughout the week, and there are the usual Mayrhofen bars and clubs for some dancing after all the laughter.

Southport Weekender 18th-20th March

And for my final weekender suggestion - Butlins in Bognor is once again the destination, but this time for a House & Disco extravaganza known as “The Worlds Friendliest Party” - with a huge line up featuring Moodymann, Louie Vega, Mr Scruff, Giles Peterson, Dimitri from Paris, Artful Dodger and so many more.

There’s even a UK Garage takeover, and one evening, one venue is hosting Legends of Jazz. There really is something for everyone.
